I think first read Daphne Du Maurier in high school when I couldn’t put down Rebecca. That books scared me but also put a spell on me so that I couldn’t put it down until the last page had been turned. My Cousin Rachel had the same effect. Throughout the entire I was a little bit afraid for everyone’s safety but still unable to make up my mind about the ulterior motives of Rachel. Everyone and every action are so suspect. Who is one to trust and believe? I love period pieces that remind me of the grandeur we have enjoyed recently with series such as Downtown Abbey and The Crown. I can just imagine the carriages and fine frocks, the chaste or not so chaste courtships, and the lives of servant and served all living together. I didn’t see the movie but the book is terrific. It doesn’t bog down and its’s not predictable.
